the project

Three key areas of focus

The Kilimanjaro Development Center is a multi-purpose project with three key areas of focus: Tree planting, education and sport activities.

Each area of focus is described below, alongside their relation to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Tree Planting

The Kilimanjaro Development Center will plant trees on the land and support SDG 13, target 13.1 by working on minimizing energy and carbon footprint as a way to neutralize CO2 emissions.

If viable, fruit trees will be planted and there will be allocated space for supplementary crops. The aim is that this will create jobs and provide fresh, locally grown produce.

Locally known and professionally qualified Kenyans will carry out the planting of the trees. In addition, the Kilimanjaro Development Center will ensure well-qualified supervision of the planted forest.

Education

The land will have a devoted space for educational activities. There will be established a classroom where it is intended that approx. 25 schoolchildren will have the opportunity to get educational support. For example, bookkeeping and communications training will all be part of the curriculum.

All donations in relation to education will help make sure that the local youth can get the educational support they need.

Donations will also help provide accommodation and food for volunteer teachers who will visit the land to teach the youth in topics such as English and mathematics. The volunteer teachers can, for example, be students who are taking an education to become a teacher. Contact has already been made with a University College in Denmark and discussions on a possible collaboration are initiated.

This aspect of the project will support SDG 4, target 4.1.

Sports activities

The Kilimanjaro Development Center will have dedicated outdoor space that schoolchildren and young people can use for playing sports and taking part in other activities, such as training. This will support SDG 3, target 3.4.

An example is an 8-day course where youth groups of up to 15 persons will take part in outdoor adventures and learn skills that will amplify their positive and constructive impact on their communities. Activities include, among others, rock climbing, trekking and team building

  • Educational support for approx. 25 schoolchildren
  • Approx. 3-4 events per year for schoolchildren and youth
  • Accommodation and food for volunteer teachers who will visit the land to provide educational support to the youth – these volunteer teachers can, for example, be students undertaking a teacher education
